Gary S. Allen, MD, FACS

En el 2007, el Dr. Allen, cirujano cardiotorácico certificado por la junta, fue el 33° cirujano del mundo admitido en el "Beating Heart Hall of Fame" (Salón de la Fama del Corazón Latiente). Este honor es otorgado por la Guidant Corporation a los mejores cirujanos que demuestran una técnica ejemplar en procedimientos sin circulación extracorpórea.

En enfoque de la práctica del Dr. Allen es la cirugía cardiaca mínimamente invasiva. La investigación clínica, la educación médica de grado y la educación del paciente son importantes facetas de su práctica fuera de la sala de operaciones.

Dr. Allen asistió al Albany Medical College en Albany, New York, donde recibió su título de médico. Completó su residencia en cirugía general en la Universidad de Texas, Houston, donde se tomó un tiempo para completar una beca de investigación postdoctoral de dos años en el Artificial Heart Research Laboratory de la Universidad de Utah en Salt Lake City. La investigación del Dr. Allen fue financiada a través de una subvención del Instituto Nacional del Corazón, los Pulmones y la Sangre (NHLBI, por sus siglas en inglés), y estudió mecanismos de control para dispositivos de soporte circulatorio mecánico. Regresó a la Universidad de Utah donde completó su beca en cirugía cardiotorácica.

Al Dr. Allen se le atribuye la implementación y el éxito general del programa cardiaco del Osceola Regional Medical Center en Kissimmee, Florida. Mientras trabajaba en el Osceola Regional, se desempeñó como Director Médico del Instituto del Corazón, Jefe de Cirugía Cardiotorácica, Presidente del Comité de Atención Crítica y Presidente del Comité de Farmacia y Terapéutica.

El Dr. Allen ha publicado extensamente en revistas especializadas evaluadas por pares en el campo de la cirugía cardiaca durante los últimos 10 años. Ha sido ponente invitado en numerosas conferencias para hablar sobre cirugía cardiotorácia y es miembro de la Sociedad de Cirujanos Torácicos, la Sociedad Internacional para Cirugía Cardiotorácica Mínimamente Invasiva y del Consejo en Cirugía Cardiotorácica y Vascular de la Asociación Americana del Corazón.

El Dr. Allen fue director de curso del Programa de Capacitación sobre TMR Toracoscópica de CardioGenesis; del Programa de Capacitación sobre el Procedimiento Maze de Boston Scientific y del Curso Avanzado sobre la Válvula Aórtica Freestyle de Medtronic. Fue Presidente de la Junta Comunitaria de la Asociación Americana del Corazón en 2006 y continúa participando activamente en esfuerzos de concientización sobre las enfermedades cardiacas.
